If you have tendon pain, you need to do Dry Needling! I have never seen a short treatment work so well to reduce pain, and keep the pain away for a long time like I have with dry needling. The most common areas of tendon pain I dry needle are:
- patella/quad tendon
- achilles tendon
- rotator cuff tendons
- wrist flexor/extensor tendons (think golfers/tennis elbow)
- hamstring tendon
- hip flexor tendon
- bicep tendon
- glute tendon
If you have pain in any of these areas, dry needling would be helpful to reduce the pain and improve your movement!
How tendon pain comes about is a convoluted process, but to put it simply the tendon structure is overloaded compared to what it can tolerate, and the collagen structure supporting the tendon is weakened from its normal state. A normally healthy tendon will transfer force from muscle to bone to produce movement and stability, but a weakened tendon will not have the same capacity, which can lead to pain!
This pain will limit your ability to lift overhead, squat down, carry things, run, jump, play with your kids and grandkids, even sit and sleep comfortably!
The dry needling works to reduce pain by creating a very small "injury" to the tendon to elicit your bodies natural healing response. Your body pumps a bunch of blood to the area, and your bodies natural healing processes kick into gear. With that comes a bunch of chemicals your body naturally produces at the site of injury with the sole purpose of cleaning up the area and laying a foundation of new and healthy tissue to make those activities that were once painful, more tolerable again!
